Boxing Day Celebration with Your Beloved Ones
Dec 23rd 2022
Boxing Day takes place on December 26th. Boxing Day is a centuries-old gift-giving day that originated in Britain. Yes, boxes are a big part of Boxing Day traditions! It was a custom on that day for tradesmen to collect their “Christmas boxes,” gifts of money or goods in return for reliable service all year. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the custom arose because servants, who would have to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, were allowed to visit their families the next day and employers would give them boxes to take home containing gifts and bonuses. Here are some exciting and entertaining ideas to make the most of the festive holidays:
- Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of food and fun. Because it is the cook’s day off (traditionally speaking), mostly leftovers are on the menu. Food on Boxing Day usually includes leftover turkey from the day before. This can be eaten in sandwiches or as a meal with vegetables, roast potatoes and all the trimmings.
- Today’s more popular Boxing Day sporting activities include watching horse races and football matches against local rivals. Charity and giving to the poorer among us is still a big part of Boxing Day. Some folks participate in charity runs.
- Pop-up ice rinks are a regular Christmas installment, and there's bound to be one not too far from you. So gather the hats, scarves and kids, and go skating on Boxing Day!
- If your kids have new Christmas bikes to try out, you’re on to a winner with a Boxing Day bike ride! Just make sure you pick a route that suits their cycling abilities, if they’re still at the falling-off-every-five-minutes stage, pick a shorter route so you can carry their bike (and them) back to the car if needed!
- Boxing Day might not seem like the obvious occasion to visit a zoo, farm or wildlife park, but many of these attractions are open on 26 December and are often far quieter than normal. And unlike you, after a quiet Christmas Day the animals might actually be glad of visitors! If your local attractions aren't open, see what wildlife you can spot on your winter walk.
- If you love nothing more than taking advantage of a bargain, go ahead and indulge in a bit of sales shopping. Most malls and shops open on Boxing Day and offer decent discounts across the board, so if you've been holding back on making a purchase for yourself prior to Christmas, now's the time!
- Trying to see everyone on Christmas Day can be tricky, so why not have a family get together on Boxing Day instead? That way there's less stress over who's cooking Christmas Dinner and the kids can show each other their new toys. Boxing Day is also a good time to visit relatives or neighbors who may have been alone on Christmas Day.
