Fastelavn is a Denmark traditional carnival. The festival is quite similar with Halloween costume party, but the thing that makes it difference is the event are meant for kids and there are also some games are being held in the festival. Usually, Fastelavn is held on Sunday or Monday before Ash Wednesday (first day of Lent in Christianity), which celebration is based on Roman Catholic traditional celebration for pre-Easter days (Catholic and some Christians celebration for 40 days of Jesus sacrifice before his death and resurrection by praying, fasting, and getting closer with God). Therefore, basically Fastelavn is a party before the fasting (Lent), 40 days of pre-Easter started in Ash Wednesday and end in the Easter Day on Sunday. Fastelavn is also considered by some people as transition period from winter to spring.
The climax of Fastelavn is marked by the crushing of a big barrel with a cat picture on it. Inside the barrel, there are many snacks for kids, such as candy. The kid who can crush the barrel is called Fastelavn king or Fastelavn queen. Meanwhile, all the kids who attend the festival will always get some snacks for them. The cat symbol on it is had been there since medieval era, inspired by a tale of a cat which was put in a barrel, and the barrel was hit until it crushed apart, but the cat somehow got away. After that, the cat was hunted and if it’s not caught, many people believed that bad luck will come to the city.
Fastelavn itself etymologically came from ‘fastelaghen’, a word from ancient Denmark era, which means pre-Easter period. In Denmark, the baked food which is related with Fastelavn is fastelavnsbolle, a round-shape bread with sugar, chocolate, and whip cream on it.
