History Of The World Teacher’s Day
Dec 6th 2022
World Teachers' Day is observed on October 5 annually. It is also known as International Teachers' Day. Its aim is to raise awareness about the role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels and to improve the situations of teachers in the world. Almost everybody has a favorite teacher, someone who went above and beyond to encourage you because they could see your potential. Considering that teachers mold future generations, taking one day every year to say “thank you” is the least we can do. No matter where you are in the world today, remember that teachers matter!
This important celebration marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It sets standards regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers for their initial preparation, further education, recruitment, employment, and learning conditions. Honoring the teachers’ contribution to their students, the occasion focuses on appreciation, assessment, and changes required for the teachers. Therefore, to complement the recommendation of 1966, another recommendation focusing on the status of higher education teaching personnel was adopted in 1997. Launched with the motive of promoting help for teachers, World Teachers’ day also creates awareness about the role of the profession in meeting the needs of future generations. Celebrated in around hundred countries across the globe, the special day witnesses several schools and colleges organizing programs and events in respect of their teachers. From skits to singing to dance performances, students go all out to honor their teachers.
World Teachers Day 2022 theme is 'the transformation of education begins with teachers'. As per UNESCO, the day celebrates the critical role of teachers in transforming learners' potential by ensuring they have the tools they need to take responsibility for themselves, for others, and for the planet.
