Over a hundred countries all over the world are always celebrating teachers’ day. Teacher’s day is a special teacher appreciation day and may include a celebration to honor teachers’ role for special contributions in education or the community in general. Teachers' day is celebrated as a sign of support for the teachers, because the sustainability of future generations are in the hands of teachers.
UNESCO stated that the world teacher day is a form of representation of caring, appreciation, and understanding of the teacher's vital role, which teaches knowledge and builds the next generation of the nation. World teacher days are commemorated every 5th of October since 1994. Education International (EI), which is a federation representing professional teaching worldwide, recommends that the world's teacher days must be recognized and celebrated throughout the world.
The idea of celebrating teacher's day began in the 20th century. Many countries have this important moment to celebrate the role of local educators as an important milestone in education. As for example, Argentina has commemorated the death of former Argentine president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento on September 11, 1915 as teacher’s day. While for years, India has celebrated the birthday of its second president, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on September 5, 1962 as the teacher’s day to honor his services. Since teachers’ day are celebrated based on various history of many countries, these countries around the globe celebrate the teachers’ day on different dates.
Teacher's Day in Vietnam
Just like any other country, Vietnam also celebrates the teacher's day as an annual holiday every November 20th. The history of the teacher's day in Vietnam originated from a meeting between educators in communist bloc nations in Warsaw in 1957. It was first celebrated in 1958 as a day of international manifest of educators. In 1982 the day of teachers in Vietnam was named as Vietnamese Educators’ Day.
Teacher's day is the day when students express their respect to their teacher.
Vietnamese students usually start preparing a week in advance. Many classes prepare literature and art to welcome the teacher's commemoration day, while other students prepare food and flowers for parties at their schools. On this special day, the tradition of students in Vietnam is usually to visit their teacher at the teacher's home to give flowers and small gifts of food or something else, or arrange trips with their teachers and classmates. School alumni also usually join in celebrating and honoring their teachers on this teacher's day.
