When people think ‘summer music festival’, Denmark doesn’t automatically come to mind, however, people can be surprised to know that Denmark also has many festivals which already become part of the culture A host to one of the biggest summer festivals in Europe and the biggest one in Northern Europe – Roskilde festival – Denmark has a wide music landscape that has been expanding even more within the last 20 years. Roskilde Festival

The Roskilde Festival is one of the biggest summer music festivals in Denmark and all of Scandinavia. It was founded in 1971 by two high school students, Mogens Sandfær and Jesper Switzer Møller, together with promoter Carl Fischer. This actually makes the Roskilde Festival one of the oldest music festivals in Europe, as they have been strong every year since!

Although the festival was originally intended for the hippie community, it has also become an event for mainstream audiences over the years. The Roskilde Festival also places great emphasis on the environmental and social aspects of the festival. Almost everything is run by thousands of volunteers and then they participate in the festival for free.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival

Like many other summer music festivals, it was created in the previous century, specifically in 1979. However, the first event of the same name was held in 1964. Since then, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival has attracted around 250,000 visitors a year. Many concerts and meetings are free, and visitors can expect artists from all over the world. This best summer festival in Denmark always starts on the first Friday of July and lasts for 10 days.

NorthSide Festival

The NorthSide Festival started back in 2010 and has since become one of the largest summer music festivals in Denmark. In 2017, the average daily number of visitors rose to 40,000. Like the Roskilde Festival, the NorthSide Festival makes every effort to make it as durable as possible. They work with the consulting firm Wordperfect and manage to reduce waste and increase the use of CO2-neutral green energy. Apart from that, almost 100% of all the food and drinks at the festival are organic!

Smukfest

Also known as “Denmark’s most beautiful festival” is the festival that is located in the beech forest of Skanderborg and usually includes hippie concepts such as cosmic love. The first Smukfest in 1980 was to host 7 bands and 600 spectators. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest summer music festivals in Denmark, only the second after the Roskilde Festival. An average of 50,000 visitors a day and many international artists have visited Smukfest over the years. This popular summer event in Denmark is made not only by the numbers or the artists so beautiful but also by the fact that the whole Smukfest is a non-profit organization.
