Thanksgiving and Its Tradition Around The Globe

Thanksgiving Day is a holiday in North America as a day to thank and to be grateful at the end of the harvest season. As the name implies of "Thanks" and "Giving", Thanksgiving is interpreted as a day to thank God for the sustenance that has been given for one year.

Thanksgiving Day is an official holiday in the United States commemorated on the fourth Thursday in November. While in Canada, Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday in October. Based on its history, the first Thanksgiving Day celebration was held in 1619 in the British Colony now called Berkeley Plantation in Virginia, and in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621.

In the United States and Canada during Thanksgiving, turkey is the common main dish served at dinner. The consumption of turkey on Thanksgiving has been around since President Lincoln set Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday in 1863.

As an entree, roasted turkey is usually equipped with cranberry sauce and gravy. Then there are other foods served like potato puree, bread, crushed sweet potatoes, corn with bobs, peas or casserole peanuts, carrots, and Waldorf lettuce. While for dessert served various types of pies such as pumpkin pie, apple pie, sweet potato pie, and pecan pie.

Beside the United States and Canada, other countries that enjoy thanksgiving also have their own unique traditions and foods. For the countries that celebrate Thanksgiving the decisions are different, as in these 4 countries also celebrate the Thanksgiving tradition and have unique food.

Korea

Thanksgiving or harvest festival is also enjoyed in Korea. But it has a different name, namely Chuseok Festival. The Chuseok Festival is marked by 3 national holidays in Korea. The common main meal at this festival is Songpyeon which is a food of glutinous flour and filled with a variety of sweet stuffing like red peanut butter, sesame, and peanut butter. Then steamed with a bamboo cage. Songpyeon is usually enjoyed for family gathering while enjoying the holidays.

German

Because Thanksgiving in Germany takes place in Spring when white asparagus is harvesting, so, asparagus is almost served as the main food. One of them is a boiled asparagus that comes with hollandaise sauce and served with boiled potatoes.

Sweden

In Sweden,Boiled potatoes, boiled freshwater lobster, and marinated herring must be served at Thanksgiving. Special dish in Sweden at Thanksgiving day is a Swedish pancake and Ercis Soup (Pea Soup) soup which is enjoyed with bits of sausage and ham.

Russia

In Russia, Thanksgiving Day is not only a celebration of gratitude for the abundant harvest, but also as a sign of gratitude for the end of a long winter and the arrival of a warm spring. Russia thanksgiving day usually celebrated by serving pancakes served with special toppings of caviar, mushrooms, assorted jams, and smeared with butter.
